scary. so scary.

homophobic slurs at bmc halloween party

yesterday a dorm resident and friend discovered that her “Q is for Queer” sign (the one we provided for glbt history month tabling) had been vandalized during the halloween party. among the slander was “f is for fucking disgusting faggot”. i realize that a lot of people at the party were not from the tri-co but i’m finding myself extremely distrustful of the tri-co and its friends right now particularly after our glbt history month. i feel hurt and suprised eventhough i probably shouldn’t be because that IS the real world and we still have so much work to do. but its still painful when it hits so close to home. slander on your own door. i’m extremely disappointed and ill thinking about how it felt for her to get back to her room and see that.

dorm glbt history month movie night

question. are we able to provide (read: get reimbursed for) snacks for our movie night- or any tea we plan for example? food always draws a crowd. :]

sign language

It’s interesting how often people who are differently abled seems to slip through the cracks when considering diversity. I hope we as CDA’s don’t fall into the same trap. I was just thinking about how rare it is to see the deaf community represented in mainstream culture and even within other minority groups (people of color, lgbtq, etc.). But it does seem that people are beginning to make strides in that direction. For example, last season The L Word featured a deaf recurring character (actress MARLEE MATLIN) as well as her appearance on Dancing With The Stars- important if you think about those kids who are watching tv and finally seeing someone they can identify with. I know how meaningful it was seeing latinas on tv or in movies as a child.

Another more recent example, which I am very excited about is Sia’s new music video Soon We’ll Be Found, in which she beautifully uses american sign language. here’s a link!

I wish Bryn Mawr taught sign language…

this is one of my favorite Def Poetry Jam spoken word pieces…..
