And they talk about the South…

Okay, so I know it is it is finals but I had to post this. Since I have come to Bryn Mawr, I have gotten slack about being from Georgia from a select few. I just want everyone to know, this would never happen in the South without more press. One, people would be outraged and two, violence would ensue. Based on my experiences, I am now convinced that the south is more liberal than north. Gasp!

I think it is because in the North, people are taught that they are automatically more accepting because of where they were born; therefore they they never make an effort to learn anything relating to diversity. Also, the north is more homogenous. In the south, even if you live in Jump Off Mississppi, there will be somewhere there that is diffreent than you . To compensate for the stereotypes about the south, most people parents beat acceptance into their children once they are old enough to understand differences. That, and I feel that in the north it is more acceptable to stay in the same place your whole life. If you can, most people in the south move somewhere, anywhere. I could be wrong about my theory, but I don’t think so! For sure, no one in there right mind in the south would name their kid Adolf Hitler. Read the article and tell me what you think.

Slumber Partayy!!!

Seeing as we are most likely the most fun group of people on campus, it is a shame we do not hang out as a CDA entourage very often. Maybe we need some sort of matching article of clothing *hint hint, wink wink*. To solve this, some of us came up with the suggestion of a sleepover. I don’t know how y’all’s schedules look, but I am just throwing the idea out there to transformed to whatever you see fit.

Reflecting on Tuesday

As of Tuesday, my facilitation cherry has officially been popped. No longer do I fear of violent fist fights breaking out in the middle of the room or the awkward silence (either literal or metaphorical) that results from apathy. Overall, I enjoyed it but am still convinced that my second time will be better. What did strike me throughout the conversation is that everyone was trying to prove that they were more discriminated against than someone else.

Granted, I do feel everyone is affected by discrimination in one way or another, I never thought of it as something you wanted. More and more, I am beginning to notice that people are reaching to put themselves in some disfranchised group, but why? For sympathy? To make their accomplishments look more amazing because of what they had to overcome? To relate to their minorities peers? For community? For whatever reason, I feel that it is…..sad. Sad is the only word that I can find to describe this phenomenon. It is sad that we as a society have managed to romanticize everything from rape to poverty. It is sad that people belittle the trials and tribulations of the minority members of this community by saying that their struggle, their experience and their history mean nothing because of affirmative action. Worst of all, it is sad that we can no longer take joy in our own successes if no one has praised them. We no longer allow ourselves to be questioned.

So, even though the discussion was thought to not delve as deeply into the topic as it should have, I hope that we can get from the discussions that we are equal. As cheesy as it sounds, we all have talents and issues that eventually even us all out. Though we all can’t access some resources as easily others, which is a different issue, it is important that we see ourselves on the same level. Even though the questions asked and the time allowed definitely affected the discussion, I believe the fact that we have trouble associating ourselves with both the solution and the problem kept us from delving deeper into the topic.

Straight Talk

I just wanted to thank everyone for coming out to the Straight Talk on Tuesday night. I have to admit that I was scared before it. First I thought no one would really show up, but was amazed to see how many people did end up coming. I’m so sorry about the room reservation mix up though. I guess we will be discussing at the meeting tomorrow our reflections about how the discussion went, and I think the general consensus of people did sound interested in holding another talk. For those who stayed longer, I got the general feeling that no one really felt that anything discussed in the first hour was anything new, and the common idea that “all we do at Bryn Mawr is talk” and that the “people who are here are not the problem”. Well, who knows maybe the “problem people” where there but did not speak up. I dunno I’m really eager to get feedback about how the facilitation went as I ‘m new at this.

Never mind.

You know how millions of people across the country said they were inspired and proud that this country elected a black man as president?  Well apparently they need to take it back because this British guy says Obama is not black.

Sexism in Music

First off, before I begin, Yay OBAMA!

Secondly, I might be late but I just heard this song the other day and my first response was simply WTF. There have been some offensive song but this one right here is offensive to all five senses.

homophobic slurs at bmc halloween party

yesterday a dorm resident and friend discovered that her “Q is for Queer” sign (the one we provided for glbt history month tabling) had been vandalized during the halloween party. among the slander was “f is for fucking disgusting faggot”. i realize that a lot of people at the party were not from the tri-co but i’m finding myself extremely distrustful of the tri-co and its friends right now particularly after our glbt history month. i feel hurt and suprised eventhough i probably shouldn’t be because that IS the real world and we still have so much work to do. but its still painful when it hits so close to home. slander on your own door. i’m extremely disappointed and ill thinking about how it felt for her to get back to her room and see that.

History Repeating?

With the down fall of the financial world comes the uprising of the anti-semitism. So it seems that many people have held on to those age old prejudices about Jews and gold among other things. All over the world there have been various attacks etc.  I sometimes wonder if the world is going crazy or if we’ve learned anything at all…sometimes I wonder if its all just a dream.

Election Day is Almost Here!!

And y’all need to protect yourselves, if you’re voting here. PA is a swing state, so it’s very important that everyone gets to chance to vote. One of my favorite blogs but a guide to how to protect yourself at the polls.

Check it Out.

Also, since I believe I forgot to post last week, I’m gonna post something else. It is a wee bit depressing. ?uestlove, from the groundbreaking hip-hop group the Roots recently blogged about his experiences being a large black man. It’ll break your heart.
